Barley's journey began at the Lancrăm high-kill shelter in Transylvania, Romania, where he arrived on 1 September 2025.

At the beginning of October 2025, Walnut Tree Sanctuary travelled to Romania for the very first time and visited the Lancrăm shelter. During that visit, we discovered a litter of four puppies without their mother who urgently needed rescuing. Those puppies happened to share their kennel with Barley.

Although it doesn't show in his profile picture, Barley is actually a small to medium-sized dog. With his youthful face, we initially thought he was just another puppy, but he is in fact around one to two years old.

There was no way we could leave Barley behind while taking only the puppies, so we rescued all five of them together. They were first transferred to our partner veterinary clinic, Diana's, in Alba, before Barley moved to one of our partner boarding kennels in Romania, with Iulia.

Life with Iulia has given Barley the chance to relax and flourish. Although he doesn't yet live in a family home, he enjoys a safe environment where he can play, make friends, and simply be a happy dog.

From the very moment we rescued him, Barley's wonderful personality shone through. Despite having just walked out of one of the harshest environments imaginable, he immediately covered us in kisses and cuddles during the car journey, even though we were complete strangers. His ability to trust and love so quickly was incredibly moving.

Barley is an affectionate and playful young dog. He adores other dogs, loves playing with toys—especially his ball and his soft toys—and approaches life with endless enthusiasm.

After waiting for nearly a year, Barley has more than earned his chance to find a family of his own. We know he will bring joy, affection, and laughter to the lucky people who welcome him into their home.
