Barney's journey began at the Lancrăm high-kill shelter in Transylvania, Romania, where he arrived on 30 July 2025. Already quite thin when he entered the shelter, Barney struggled to cope with the harsh conditions and quickly lost even more weight. Like many gentle dogs in overcrowded shelters, he found it difficult to compete for food and soon became weak and frail.

Knowing he could not continue like this, Walnut Tree Sanctuary stepped in and rescued him in September 2025. Barney was transferred to our partner foster, Cera, in Bulbucata, south of Bucharest, where he finally had the chance to recover and regain his strength.

Since leaving Lancrăm, Barney has transformed. He has gained a great deal of weight and is now looking healthier and stronger than he has in a very long time. In fact, by the time he eventually joins the sanctuary, he may even need a little diet to keep him in shape.

Barney is a wonderfully easy-going dog. Friendly, gentle, and affectionate, he enjoys human company and adapts well to new situations. He walks beautifully on a lead and is always happy to spend time outdoors. When we visited him in May, we were struck by how calm, loving, and relaxed he had become.

Barney is the kind of dog who asks for very little but gives so much in return. His gentle nature and trusting personality make him a joy to be around.

After everything he has been through, Barney deserves the comfort, security, and love of a family of his own. We hope to welcome him to the sanctuary soon, where he can continue his journey towards the happy future he deserves.
