Kaiko was six years old when he arrived at the high-kill shelter of Lancrăm, Transylvania, Romania, on 29 August 2025. He arrived severely underweight, and it was immediately clear that he had endured a very difficult life.

Kaiko is an American Akita, a breed that is often overlooked by rescuers because of its size, strength and specific needs. As a result, dogs like him are especially vulnerable in high-kill shelters. We rescued Kaiko in October 2025 and transferred him to Sabin's boarding kennel near Brăila, in eastern Romania, where he has remained ever since.

Since his rescue, Kaiko has gained a substantial amount of weight and has blossomed under Sabin's care. He has learned to trust the person looking after him and has shown just how rewarding patience and understanding can be. Like many Akitas, Kaiko is likely to thrive as the only dog in his future home, with an owner who understands and appreciates the breed.
