Merlin

SPONSOR ME

Merlin's story is one we simply could not forget.

We first met Merlin at the municipal shelter in Alba, Transylvania, Romania, during Walnut Tree Sanctuary's very first trip to the country in early October 2025.

Out of all the dogs we met, Merlin stayed with us. For five years, he had been confined to a kennel measuring less than one square metre. It was so incredibly small that he could barely turn around without touching both sides. It was heartbreaking to imagine a dog spending years of his life in such conditions.

What touched us even more was Merlin himself. Despite everything he had endured, he remained incredibly joyful behind the bars. He constantly tried to interact with us, seeking affection and making every effort to connect with people. There was not a trace of bitterness in him—only kindness and hope.

We returned to France, but Merlin never left our thoughts. By the end of October 2025, we knew we had to go back for him. We rescued Merlin and transferred him to Iulia, one of our favourite partner boarding kennels in Romania, where he has been waiting ever since for his chance to join the Walnut Tree Sanctuary.

Today, Merlin is thriving. He loves playing with his toys, enjoys every season outdoors, and has become great friends with Barley. Watching him discover simple pleasures after years of confinement is incredibly rewarding.

Merlin is now around seven years old. After losing so much of his life behind bars, he simply cannot afford to lose another year. More than anything, he deserves to spend the years ahead surrounded by love, comfort and the freedom he has waited so long to experience.

By sponsoring Merlin, you are helping us provide the care, enrichment and support he needs while he waits for the loving family who will finally give him the home he has deserved for so many years.
