Sassy was two years old when she arrived at the high-kill shelter of Lancrăm, Transylvania, Romania, on 21 August 2025. Like so many mixed-breed village dogs, she had very little chance of attracting the attention of a rescue organisation. Yet there was something special about her. Her beautiful grey brindle coat and determined spirit immediately caught our eye.

In spite of her small size, Sassy was housed with much larger dogs and had to fend for herself. Despite being frightened, she refused to disappear into the background. Instead, she barked through the bars, doing everything she could to make someone notice her. That determination is what inspired her name. She was telling the world that she was there and desperately needed help.

We rescued Sassy in October and transferred her to Alina’s boarding kennel near Brăila, in eastern Romania, where she has been waiting ever since.

Sassy is still a shy little girl. She has never learned to walk on a lead or to explore the world outside her kennel, so when we tried taking her out, she simply froze. But once we sat quietly with her, her true personality began to emerge. She happily accepted treats, enjoyed being stroked and showed herself to be a gentle, affectionate dog with enormous potential. We are confident that, once she joins us at the sanctuary and is given the time and patience she needs to build her confidence, Sassy will blossom into a wonderful companion and eventually find the loving home she deserves.
